Today, Rep. Jeff Miller, Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, issued the following statement honoring the life of former Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Gordon H. Mansfield:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of former Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Gordon H. Mansfield's passing. Gordon's life was defined by his service to our country and to his fellow veterans. His remarkable career serves as a shining example to all who strive to make America a better place. Throughout two combat tours in Vietnam, as an executive with the Paralyzed Veterans of America and later as the VA's second in command and acting secretary, Gordon was a tireless advocate for two of America's most treasured resources: our ideals and our veterans. His tremendous accomplishments and indomitable spirit -- despite a serious spinal cord injury sustained in battle -- remain an inspiration to all who knew him. Gordon will be sorely missed. His family will remain in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
