"The Secretary of the Treasury is the premier financial post in government and our financial ambassador to the world. How can we place in that post a man who has consistently placed his own partisan interests above the financial well-being of our constituents?"

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, issued the following statement today after Committee Republicans launched an inquiry into Jack Lew's role in violating the "Medicare trigger" law:

"Mr. Lew is not only the architect of two failed budgets and a deliberate effort to mislead the American people, but was also budget director during the violation a federal law designed to protect Medicare beneficiaries. Such conduct cannot be tolerated by lawmakers, Democrat or Republican. The Secretary of the Treasury is the premier financial post in government and our financial ambassador to the world. How can we place in that post a man who has consistently placed his own partisan interests above the financial well-being of our constituents? At some point, conduct must matter. If the Obama Administration intends to press forward with this nomination, then it should comply with our oversight at once so Congress can know why the law we authored was ignored."
