House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Institute for Supply Management released a report showing that the manufacturing sector expanded in January:
"Today's report by the Institute for Supply Management reaffirms the strength of America's manufacturing sector and its potential to keep growing and creating well paying jobs. This first report of 2013 shows that manufacturing continues to expand, helping to grow our overall economy for the 44th month in a row.
"We are continuing to see gains for manufacturing, but without action by Congress to invest in increasing our competitiveness we cannot fully tap into the potential of our manufacturing sector to sustain the growth of jobs and opportunities for the next generation. Manufacturing jobs have traditionally been skilled jobs that pay better and lead to a higher quality of life in the communities where they are created. House Democrats understand this, and that's why our Make It In America jobs plan invests in helping to attract manufacturing businesses to our shores and keep them here. I hope House Republicans will work with Democrats to pass Make It In America legislation so we can help more of our manufacturing businesses grow, export, and put more Americans back to work."
