Palazzo Votes Against Senate Fiscal Cliff Deal

Statement

Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-04) released the following statement after voting tonight against the Senate fiscal cliff package. The bill, which added almost $4 trillion to the deficit and contained minimal spending cuts, passed without the support of many House Republicans.

"My constituents in South Mississippi sent me to Washington to get our spending under control. Over the past year, House Republicans voted on bill after bill to address our spending problems, protect families and small businesses from historic tax hikes, and replace senseless sequester cuts with responsible ones. And one after one, those bills went to die in the Senate. Then early this morning, in reaction to yet another manufactured crisis, the Senate sent us a $4 trillion package with $41 of tax increases for every $1 of cuts. A bill that sets the stage for the next crisis by only taking care of two months of sequestration. This may be a deal, but it's no solution.

"I think the bill we voted on tonight was the result of an honest effort to come together to find a solution to our fiscal cliff problems. But along the way, some lost sight of the goal: real spending cuts, meaningful tax reform and a pro-growth agenda that will help get our struggling economy back on its feet. Congress has grown so accustomed to kicking the can down the road, that government doesn't know how to operate any other way."
