U.S. Congressman Pat Tiberi (R-OH) released the following statement:
"At the end of the day, this was a vote about extending tax cuts permanently for 99 percent of taxpayers and hundreds of thousands of small businesses or increasing taxes on 100 percent of all Americans. Preventing this tax hike has been one of our goals. In addition, this bill permanently patches the AMT, permanently fixes the estate tax, and permanently repeals the marriage penalty. This wasn't an easy decision though. This wasn't a perfect bill. Do I like everything in this bill? No. It makes me sick to my stomach that we couldn't get the Senate or the president to deal with spending cuts in this bill. But if we had not acted every American that works would have seen their tax rates go up. In fact, it would have been the largest tax increase in history. The effects of tax hikes on everyone while our economy is struggling took priority. Fighting for critical spending cuts doesn't end tonight. We'll continue to work to change the trajectory of spending in this country. We'll continue to work toward comprehensive tax reform that simplifies our tax code, and puts Americans and American businesses first. We'll continue to work to strengthen Medicare and Social Security to ensure the programs will survive for our children and grandchildren. We'll continue to work to reduce the debt. Preventing higher taxes was tonight's success; the next success will be cutting spending."
