Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-12-NY) hailed final passage today of the balance of an aid package to those areas affected by Superstorm Sandy last October.

"Today's legislation funds crucial infrastructure restoration and repair in my district and so many others," Maloney said. "When combined with aid to the National Flood Insurance Program passed on January 6, it at last achieves the $60 billion level of funding passed by the Senate in the last session.

"Four major hospitals in and around New York City were evacuated and sustained significant damage, three of them in my district. The destruction at New York University Langone Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital Center, and the Manhattan VA Medical Center is too extensive for them to recover from without federal help.

"The worst damage in the 108-year history of the New York City subways included completely flooded subway tunnels and a dozen subway stations seriously damaged or destroyed.

"This legislation will help fund the desperately needed reconstruction and recovery efforts of those hospitals and the subway system.

"Federal disaster aid shouldn't be a political football. Congress shouldn't have a double standard when it comes to providing emergency storm relief. With the passage of both the Rogers and Frelinghuysen bills, we have finally succeeded in approving needed aid to those hit so hard by the second-worst storm in American history," Maloney said.
