Statement By Senators McCain, Alexander And Barrasso on Bipartisan Senate Procedure Reform

U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and John Barrasso (R-WY) today issued the following statement on the rule changes and standing orders passed this evening to reform Senate procedure:

"This agreement averts the so-called "nuclear option' that would have done irreparable damage to the institution of the United States Senate. It allows this body to function in a fairer and more efficient manner. It addresses the legitimate and pressing concerns of our colleagues on both sides of the aisle, making it easier for the Majority to bring legislation to the floor and at the same time easing the way for the Minority to offer amendments. Most of all, it preserves the Senate's unique qualities -- including a tradition of vigorous debate and a robust amendment process -- that were envisioned by our Founding Fathers as so vital to the functioning of our democracy.

"We applaud the work of Senator Levin, whose leadership and commitment to the best traditions of this body helped pave the way to this agreement, as well as the important contributions of Senators Kyl, Schumer, Pryor and Cardin. We thank Majority Leader Reid and Minority Leader McConnell for their willingness to engage with us in forging bipartisan consensus on this consequential issue."
