House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement regarding the President's request to raise the debt limit:
"During a press conference last week President Obama outlined his plan to deal with the nation's $16.4 trillion debt and annual deficits topping $1 trillion; it is to simply do nothing. Unfortunately, this is the same approach that Senate Democrats have taken over the last four years in their refusal to offer, let alone pass, a budget. Only the House has met this basic function of governing by passing a budget that tackles the debt and deficit and puts America on a path to balance. In response to the Treasury Department's timeline that shows our government will soon hit its borrowing limit, the House will pass a three month debt limit increase to meet our immediate obligations and ensure a responsible budget passes both chambers of Congress. Tackling our nation's debt requires an actual deficit reduction plan from Republicans and Democrats so the American people can evaluate the tough, but necessary choices before them. It is time the Democrats in Washington work with us to address the challenges our country faces in order to ensure a prosperous future."
