Esty Statement on One Month Anniversary of Newtown Tragedy
"One month ago today, I was horrified to learn of the senseless murder of 20 first-grade children and six teachers and staff in their classrooms at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. The victims, their families, the community of Newtown, and everyone affected by this terrible event continues to be in my thoughts and prayers, particularly today.
"During my visits to Newtown over the past month, I've been reminded again and again of the tremendous sense of love and support that defines the people of that community. Yesterday, at a community meeting in Newtown, I again witnessed their courageous resolve to support each other and rebuild their lives in the wake of such unimaginable tragedy.
"The painful loss of their sons and daughters, spouses, family and friends is still very raw and will always run very deep for the people of Newtown. This event has impacted people across the country and sparked long overdue reflection and a national conversation about the need to prevent gun violence.
"With Newtown in my thoughts, I will be working with federal, state, and local officials and members of the community to prevent such horrific tragedies from occurring in communities across Connecticut and across the country."
