Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn announced she has joined the House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. The Task Force, formed by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and chaired by Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-5), will work to advance new legislation to combat the scourge of gun violence.
"My communities are unfortunately no strangers to the tragedy of gun violence," said Congresswoman Hahn. "So I am eager to sit down with my colleagues on the Task Force, hear all the sides, and get to work on a package of solutions for the epidemic of gun violence that has plagued our communities since long before Newtown."
"Janice Hahn knows the toll gun violence takes on our communities," said Chairman Thompson. "The members of our task force have an extensive range of expertise, come from diverse backgrounds and will each bring fresh and diverse ideas to the table. Working together, we can put policies in place that reduce and prevent gun violence while also protecting law-abiding individual's 2nd Amendment rights to own firearms."
"I'm open to any and all solutions," continued Hahn. "But I hope that some of the recommendations that make it out of the Task Force include universal background checks for the purchase of firearms and ammunition, the expanded use of trigger locks, and bans of assault weapons and the high capacity magazines that have been used in so many recent tragedies. A life taken with a handgun is no less of a tragedy, however. So it is my hope that the Task Force will address handguns as well."
Congresswoman Hahn has been a proud co-sponsor of legislation which would ban the types of high capacity ammunition magazines used in the recent mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut, since last January, and has called for the reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban. Congresswoman Hahn has also advocated for the expansion of gun buy-back programs and increased trigger lock use.
