Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement in regards to North Korea's recent missile launch:

"North Korea's nuclear ballistic missile programs pose a great threat to the peace and security of the world and I strongly condemn their reckless action. North Korea's actions endanger the people of Asia, they are a blatant violation of international law, and they contradict North Korea's own prior commitments. There are 30,000 United States troops, 1.5 million South Korean troops and 1 million North Korean troops in the DMZ. When I visited the DMZ I met with military and had extensive briefings on the need to pay more attention to that region and I had briefings on why North Korea is pursuing this launch.

"History is passing North Korea by, and millions of innocent people are starving to death because the regime spends all its money on weapons. It is time for China to intervene with North Korea and show that rogue country launching missiles of any kind is not safe for that region or the world. It is appropriate for the United States to be on alert on behalf of its allies in the region. However North Korea must be punished with sanctions and other actions for these childish war games.

"I personally witnessed the devastation North Korea has done to its people. While in Asia I met with a survivor of one of North Korea's concentration camps. The stories this survivor told me were horrific. We must hold North Korea accountable for its reckless behavior."
