Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) issued the following statement in reaction to today's school shooting in Newtown, CT:
"I am deeply saddened by the unmitigated evil and unspeakable tragedy that happened today at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We mourn and grieve with all of the families affected, while recognizing that most of us cannot fathom the level of their sorrow.
"I commend President Obama's statement that we must take action, no matter the politics. It has disappointingly become common in the wake of these horrific events for many to avoid serious discussions about taking substantive steps to prevent these shootings in the future, often with the excuse that "now is not the time.' Well, if not now, when? We need to examine how to improve our handling of mental health issues through better crisis identification, intervention and response, while also working to strengthen gun control measures.
"With the leadership of all of our elected officials, we can make a difference."
