Rep. Israel Message on Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut

Statement

We have a critical obligation to continue fighting for federal measures that reduce gun violence. As I said on the day of the attack, "We keep watching these horrors as teachable moments. Then we keep forgetting the lessons until the next tragedy."

Enough.

I will continue my steadfast support of federal laws to keep our children and families safer in schools, movie theaters, colleges, malls, and neighborhoods. That includes:

Introducing the Preventing Gun Violence Act, which would make it illegal for anyone convicted of a violent crime as a juvenile to buy a gun once they reach the age of 18.
Co-sponsoring Congresswoman McCarthy's Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, which would ban the sale and importation of the large capacity magazines we have seen in so many of these recent attacks. These magazines are not part of responsible gun ownership. They're used to kill as many people as possible and are unsafe on our streets.
Co-sponsoring Congresswoman McCarthy's Fix Gun Checks Act of 2011, a bill that would force states to keep their criminal databases updated, making sure guns do not fall into the hands of the wrong people.
Additionally, I will continue to push for commonsense measures that I have cosponsored like closing the gun show loophole and renewing the assault weapons ban to keep guns meant to stop the violence and wars off of our streets.

We must mourn the loss of lives, we must repair broken hearts...and we must pass measures to reduce the need to mourn lives lost and hearts broken to gun violence.

I will continue to push my colleagues who have historically opposed such steps to join you and me in thinking differently.
