U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement on the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut:

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. As a father, this senseless tragedy has been especially difficult to comprehend and the victims and their families remain in my thoughts and prayers. I would also like to recognize the heroic and life-saving actions of the teachers and staff at Sandy Hook. They reacted quickly to protect the lives of countless children in harm's way.

"I welcome the President's call for action and look forward to working with my colleagues to build support for measures that will prevent more tragedies like this. I have long supported enactment of sensible gun laws and other measures that prevent gun violence, including efforts to reinstitute the federal assault weapons ban, preventing criminals from accessing dangerous weapons and encouraging vigorous enforcement of background checks."
