Rep. Zoe Lofgren on UN Treaty Restricting the Internet

Statement

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) released the following statement today on a U.N. treaty under consideration at a global telecommunications conference in Dubai, sponsored by the International Telecommunications Union. The United States is currently refusing to sign the treaty as drafted because it would, as is being reported in various media outlets, give U.N. sanction to censorship and regulation of the Internet, including private networks:

"A free and open Internet with limited restrictions has been critical to its development into one of the greatest tools for empowering people to connect and share information globally. But there are countries and groups who wish to exert greater control over the Internet in order to restrict or censor it for political or cultural reasons. We need to stand firm against those kinds of threats if we want the Internet to continue as a vibrant engine for innovation, human rights, cultural and economic growth."
