Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05), released the following statement on the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut:
"There are no words to describe the horror of this morning's tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families who have been affected by this senseless act of violence. That so many of the victims were young children, who had their entire lives ahead of them, makes this shooting all the more heartbreaking. These children were truly innocent, knowing little about the brutality in the world until they witnessed it firsthand today. As a mother and a grandmother, my heart breaks for the families in Newtown who will not be able to hold their children tonight.
"In the face of such horror, it is important to also recognize those who acted selflessly and heroically, despite the peril to their own lives. The administration, teachers and staff whose first thought were to protect the students in their keeping, who ran to help, are true heroes. As are the police and first responders who arrived quickly to take control of the situation and help the victims.
"Now is the time to come together as a country to support these families and the community of Newtown in their time of mourning and sorrow."
