Himes Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Hear Gay Marriage Cases

Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement today regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to hear cases challenging California's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in that state, and the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which prohibits legally married gay couples from receiving federal recognition:

"It has long been my firm belief that loving gay couples should receive the same respect, recognition, and rights that straight couples do. As a longtime proponent of equality and a co-sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act to repeal DOMA, I believe the Supreme Court must uphold our constitutionally-guaranteed right to equal protection under the law and banish the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act to the proverbial dustbin of history.

"We have made incredible progress over the last few years in extending equal rights to LGBT individuals and families. However, with thousands of Connecticut couples still waiting to be recognized by the federal government, it is clear that there is more work to do. I strongly encourage the Supreme Court to rule on the side of fairness, and I look forward to a day when all families are recognized as equal across this country."
