U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, made the following statement regarding a speech by Palestinian Authority and PLO head Abu Mazen in Ramallah on Sunday in which he promised that one day the Palestinian flag would fly over "Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the state of Palestine." Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"Once again, Abu Mazen is showing his true colors. He could have spent the last four years negotiating and implementing a true and lasting peace with Israel. Instead, he continues to engage in incendiary statements to undermine the peace process, such as his statement yesterday about Jerusalem. His continued defaulting on his commitments and cozying up to Hamas is no way to further peace.

"Now, Abu Mazen and the Palestinian leadership have crossed yet another red line by obtaining the UN General Assembly's support for recognition of a non-existent Palestinian state. Enough--the Administration must back up its words with actions that enforce consequences for Ramallah's rejectionism and recklessness. The United States must stop providing taxpayer dollars or political support to a Palestinian leadership that would rather talk with Hamas than Israel and that is not a partner for peace."
