Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY4) called tomorrow's planned vote for the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state "appalling" given the recent terrorist attacks on Israel coming from Palestinian-held land and urged her colleagues to join her in opposing the measure. She issued the following statement:

"It's appalling that just days after hundreds of rockets launched from Gaza towards Israeli cities, the Palestinian Authority is once again thumbing its nose to direct bilateral negotiations and trying to unilaterally achieve statehood through the United Nations.

"Even more appalling is that any nation would condone the recent violence -- and the Palestinian Authority's failure to stop it -- during the recent assault on Israel by even considering recognizing this latest backdoor-bid for Palestinian statehood.

"We must stand up to reject violence and terrorism and support only a mutual agreement to statehood through direct negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians themselves. I strongly oppose this latest attempt to backdoor statehood through the United Nations and urge my colleagues to do the same."
