Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) issued the following response to the figures released by the U.S. Department of Labor showing 171,000 jobs were added in October, marking the 32nd consecutive month of private sector job growth. The overall unemployment rate increased slightly from 7.8 to 7.9 percent.
"The increase in private sector job shows that our economy is steadily recovering from the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression and that we are heading in the right direction. Despite this, African American unemployment increased from 13.6 to 14.3 percent and Hispanic unemployment slightly increased from 9.9 to 10 percent last month illustrating we have much work to do in creating jobs in all our communities.
"Targeted investments and accelerating public-sector job creation to re-hire teachers, firefighters, police officers and the long-term unemployed is needed to keep our economy moving forward. Republicans in Congress must work with Congressional Democrats and President Obama to reignite the American dream and put Americans back to work. Passing the American Jobs Act will get struggling Americans into good paying jobs and will strengthen the American economy for all.
