Today, Rep. Steve Israel (D -- Huntington) announced that the Department of Energy (DOE) heeded his request and established a team to help local authorities assist gas stations that still lack power. On Friday, Rep. Israel urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to focus on repowering gas stations to allow gas to flow once gas shipments arrive.
Rep. Israel said, "I am pleased that the DOE heeded my call to help gas stations get the power they desperately need to get gas pumping. Gas station owners can now call the DOE's toll free hotline at 1-866-402-3775 to report their condition. This will help FEMA know where to dispatch needed generators to stations without power as quickly as possible."
On Friday, Congressman Israel wrote to Administrator Fugate saying, "We need to ensure that stations are accessible to Long Islanders and within a half hour of their homes. That is why powering stations along major roadways will ensure that these gas stations are able to dispense the fuel that they have in stock as additional resources are being transported. To have fuel sitting idle in powerless gas stations is not acceptable."
