Congressman Tim Bishop sent the following letter to LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey today asking him to make re-powering gas stations a top priority as the work week begins.

Dear Mr. Hervey,

I am writing to request you consider prioritizing restoring power to gas stations immediately in order to help alleviate the gas shortage crisis on Long Island.

Although the Port of New York has re-opened and approximately 30 millions of gallons of gasoline are on the way or have already arrived at gas stations on Long Island, gas retailers have reported that many of their stations are without power to make the pumps work. This situation is unsustainable and requires your immediate attention.

Therefore, I respectfully request the Long Island Power Authority to add gas stations with available supply to its priority list immediately. Restoring power to gas stations should be a top priority as the weekend closes and Long Island's workforce faces the beginning of work week with longer commutes involving long waits at gas stations that are already closing main roads and making driving conditions more hazardous.

The lack of power across Long Island further compounds the difficult challenge of delivering gasoline and to accessing the gas already under ground at the stations.

I hope you agree that prioritizing gas stations will aid in our objective to return stability to Long Island and prevent further disruption to commuters and our regional economy.
