Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), released the statement below following the ruling made by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City that the Defense of Marriage Act (or DOMA) is unconstitutional in the case of Edith Schlain Windsor v. United States of America. In September, Crowley joined over 140 House members, led by fellow New York Congressman Jerrold Nadler, in filing an amicus brief in support of Ms. Windsor's challenge against DOMA.

"Today's decision is another important step forward in the fight to ensure equality for all Americans. Sexual orientation discrimination has absolutely no place in the laws and policies of this country and I urge Speaker Boehner and his colleagues to stop spending taxpayer money to defend a law that is clearly unconstitutional. I have long supported marriage equality as a fundamental right for all American families and will continue to work to ensure that all Americans are afforded equal protection under the law."
