High quality public education is essential to the prospects of our children and the economy of our state. I am concerned by the cuts in school district budgets occurring all over our state, and by the cuts faced by the University of Maine and Community College systems.
I cautiously support two experiments now occurring in Maine: a limited charter school movement that might provide alternative education for some students, and teacher evaluation programs that consider a wide array of factors including test scores, class composition, teacher experience and more. I respect the work of teachers deeply; in my opinion, any major changes in the structure of public education can only succeed by collaborating with them and valuing the wisdom of their experience.
