Standing in front of the historic Elon P. Stewart standpipe water tower located in Syracuse's Thornden Park as a backdrop, today Dan Maffei and concerned Central New Yorkers called on Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle to take a stand on hydrofracking and protect our clean water. Dan and advocates called on Congresswoman Buerkle to protect Central New York's clean water by cosponsoring the Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals (FRAC) Act and to support New York State's moratorium on hydrofracking.
"We must continue the moratorium on hydrofracking and bring fracking under the Safe Drinking Water Act" said Dan Maffei. "This is not just a state issue. Our watershed and clean water know no state boundaries. Congresswoman Buerkle say she's been studying this issue since she took office. Then she should know by now, it's time to take stand and protect our water, the health of our children, our environment and our economy."
Congresswoman Buerkle has said that hydrofracking is a state issue, can be done safely, and is a game changer. When Dan was in Congress, he supported the FRAC Act, bipartisan legislation that puts protection of public health first, by removing the "Halliburton Loophole' that gave the gas industry an exemption to the Safe Drinking Water Act, which is long-standing, basic law to ensure clean and safe drinking water for all Americans.
