I will immediately partner with vocational schools, trade schools and training programs to help with career building not just job placement. My office will provide quarterly resume writing and interviewing workshops. In Tallahassee, I will work to ensure that public vocational training and trade schools are properly funded. Also, I will work to ensure that the public school system is funded properly and appropriately which will aid in appropriate preparation for students beyond graduation from high school.
Furthermore, I want to work on making changes to the FCAT. I will fight to reform the FCAT from being punitive to diagnostic only. The legislature should set reasonable goals and bench marks as it relates to statewide standardized testing. There is a flaw in the process when over half of 10th graders in the state of Florida fail the FCAT. Studies show the longer our children stay in school, the less likely they are to commit crimes and the more productive they will become as citizens. So we need to make our schools on the cutting edge so that students learn and so that students stay in school. An educated population is the best investment a society can make so we must give teachers the proper tools needed to effectively educate our children.
I will oppose any further initiatives to reduce retirement for teachers. Conversely, I will emphatically support budget to increase for teacher's pay raise.
