Investment in education is an investment in the future of Minnesota. Education provides opportunity and a return on investment for Minnesota in the form of a highly skilled workforce.
We need to ensure that funding for our children's education - from early education thru 12th grade - is a priority. 133 school districts - a record number - asked voters in November 2011 to support referendums to help make up the shortfall caused by a shift in funding out of the K-12 educational budget at the state level. These budget balancing gimmicks supported by the GOP majority in the State Legislature mean that our district - and others throughout the state - will have to make cuts to their budget leading to higher class sizes and fewer teachers for our children. Some districts have had to borrow money to make up for the shortfall.
We also need to ensure that all students have access to an affordable post-secondary education. Double digit tuition increases are not acceptable. No parent should have to worry that they won't be able to send their student to college because their family can't afford it. No student should face an insurmountable student loan debt when they finish their education.
As your Representative, I believe in the power that comes with a great education and will work to ensure proper educational funding levels for all of our children.
