Commerce Appropriator Says the American People Are Right: The Economy is Improving and New Jobs Numbers Prove It

Statement

Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the lead House Democratic Appropriator for the Department of Commerce, issues this statement upon release of the national jobs report:

"The American people are correct: the economy is improving, and today's solid employment numbers prove the point. The latest positive consumer confidence report and numerous recent polls show that Americans understand the economy is getting better. Today we see validation in the good news of the jobs report.

"President Obama is keeping his promise on the economy to send the unemployment rate below 8 percent. Today's 7.8 percent rate is the lowest since he took office 44 months ago. And there's more: For the 31st consecutive month, the number of private sector jobs has increased. Nearly 5 million Americans are better off in the workplace, thanks to the sustained growth under the Obama policies.

"We still need to do better, and the President has a plan for the middle class to make that happen. It is time for my colleagues to get back to the nation's business, enact the American Jobs Act and keep up this positive momentum."
