At President Obama's direction, the Justice Department this week purchased a never-opened state prison in Illinois once destined to house terrorist detainees now residing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In buying the Thomson State Prison, the Administration is ignoring the objections of the House Appropriations Committee and the American people.

"Many people are concerned that this purchase is a step in the Obama Administration's plan to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay by transferring terrorist detainees to U.S. prisons, like Thomson. The American people have already objected to transferring terrorists to U.S. soil and now wait until they see the $165 million price-tag of this purchase," said Rodney.

"Either this move is a bail-out of the President's cash-strapped home state or a step toward closing Gitmo and bringing detainees to our soil. Either way, it's a terrible idea."

"This back-door move by the Obama Administration to open Thompson and reject the will of Congress and the American people is dangerously irresponsible and ignores concerns raised by scores of family members of 9/11 victims, who signed a letter in July objecting to the purchase of this prison."
