As a member of the Wake County Board of Education, I have seen first-hand how decisions made at the state level affect the children and teachers in every school. As your State Representative, I will bring a well-informed perspective on the best ways to reform education to maximize the value of our education system to students and taxpayers. In order to better fund education, we need to ensure tax dollars actually reach the classroom. Additionally, we need to offer support for the good things happening in education. The cap on charter schools should be completely lifted. Merit pay should be encouraged through public policy to raise students' overall achievement and test scores. Parents, not politicians and bureaucrats, need more control in choosing where there children are educated. School districts need more autonomy to set policies best suited to their localities. For too long, education results have taken a backseat to education politics at the state level. I will make certain that in every decision on education policy, I put the needs of students first. That is my approach on the Wake County Board of Education and is will be my practice in the General Assembly.
