Many members of my extended family are involved in small and large businesses, everything from farming, to electrical contracting, to high-tech enterprises. My husband, Marlon, an electrical engineer, has been part of three successful high-tech start-up companies that have created over a thousand jobs, and is currently involved in an entrepreneurial venture that will transform the computer memory industry. I understand the challenges facing businesses in our state.

As an economist, my knowledge and experience make me uniquely qualified to help move our state forward in the face of significant economic and budget challenges. I am committed to listening to our business community, asking the tough questions, and making thoughtful, evidence-based policy decisions to improve the business climate and advance job creation in our state.

As a member of the Minnesota House (2007-2010) I worked on, and, as your state senator, I will work on, issues of priority to your businesses and families:

*Job creation and creating a healthy business climate. I authored legislation to reduce business taxes, stimulate R& D investment and grow jobs in Minnesota, and will continue to work in this area.
*Slowing the growth of health-care costs. I worked on lowering health-care costs for families, businesses and in the state budget and will ensure that the new MN Health Insurance Exchange provides a competitive, transparent market place to better serve the health-insurance needs of small businesses at an affordable price.
*Government reform and redesign. I will continue to work to redesign and to encourage shared services among and between agencies and local government in order to deliver services more efficiently and provide better value to taxpayers.
*Stabilizing state government revenues. I will work on tax and budget reserve policy reforms that address the havoc created by swings in state revenue and prevent efficient management of government programs, including support of public schools
