I'm against the Titan cement plant locating in Castle Hayne. Putting a cement plant directly adjacent to protected wetlands is pretty ridiculous, even if the cement plant does meet the minimum air quality standards. The air quality in New Hanover County has been poor, so even if Titan is only a minor contributor to the air emissions, it's making the problem worse. I'm sensitive to property owner's rights and the land is zoned industrial (which is a problem that the county commissioners created), but I think the neighbors should get a say when their property value and health is negatively impacted. From what I have seen at the hearings I've attended, the community has spoken pretty clearly in saying that they do not want Titan here. Luckily for New Hanover County, we have so many things that will attract other employers, so I don't feel like we should have to compromise to get new business here.
