Our country is the envy of the world because we are free. Yet in our state, liberals in Raleigh spent the last decade growing bigger and bigger government -- so much so that it strangled the job market. We now have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, and I consider that unacceptable! For our economy to grow out of this recession and provide jobs for out-of-work North Carolinians, we must protect our freedom from excessive government intervention.

Specifically, our state's economy is suffering from excessive tax rates and government red tape. When our government is big, our private businesses cannot innovate and expand. If elected, I will work every day of my term to find wasteful government spending, so we can reduce the taxes burdening North Carolinians and our businesses. I'll fight for zero-based budgeting, which shines a spotlight on government waste by requiring state agencies to start each budget at $0 and justify every penny they receive.

North Carolina in particular badly needs lower taxes to compete within our Southeast region. The Tax Foundation rates our state's business climate 44th in the country. That must change. For our area in particular, local family farms are threatened by the death (estate) tax, which egregiously taxes profits a second time after you die. I will eliminate this tax, so our farmers can keep their businesses in the family. I will also add a sunset date to all regulations, so we can reassess all regulations regularly to eliminate needless red tape.

Above all, we must prevent the implementation of Obamacare in our state. Besides being the largest tax hike in history, it is a job-killer, an assault on religious freedom, and a threat to our doctor-patient relationship, if not our entire health care system. Even though it is a federal issue, we can join other states fighting Obamacare and refuse the Medicaid-funding trap that adds huge costs to our system in years to come. Hopefully, Mitt Romney will be elected President so Obamacare can be repealed. But if not, I will stand ready to fight Obamacare at every opportunity.

I will fight efforts to infringe on our 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Hunting and sporting is a way of life here, and I will defend the long-held traditions that unite our community. Gun control laws simply make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves.
