U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) has asked the Army Corps of Engineers to expedite repairs to the Chemung Levee in Athens. The community desperately needs the levee repaired to protect Athens from future floods.

In a letter to Colonel J. Richard Jordan of the U.S. Army Corps' Baltimore District, Sen. Toomey asked for an update on the project, including the anticipated start and completion dates.

"I am dismayed that construction has not yet begun a full year since the flooding occurred. One reason for this delay is reportedly due in part to a contractor's failure to submit the proper paperwork. Given the importance of this project, I urge you to do all you can to ensure that further bureaucratic delays of this sort are resolved immediately," Sen. Toomey wrote.

Dear Col. Jordan,

As you know, dozens of Pennsylvania communities are still recovering from the tragic flooding brought on by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. The borough of Athens in Bradford County is one of those communities, and they are desperately seeking repairs to the Chemung Levee to help mitigate future flood damage.

My staff has been in constant contact with Army Corps of Engineers officials from the Baltimore District office and leaders from Athens to do all we can to expedite these repairs. We were very pleased that the Army Corps committed funding to repair the levee.

However, I am dismayed that construction has not yet begun a full year since the flooding occurred. One reason for this delay is reportedly due in part to a contractor's failure to submit the proper paperwork. Given the importance of this project, I urge you to do all you can to ensure that further bureaucratic delays of this sort are resolved immediately.

Further, I respectfully request to know the expected construction start date and the estimated completion date. Please keep my office apprised of all updates regarding this important project.
