Lugar Calls on the Venezuelan Government to Respect the Will of the Venezuelan People

Location: Unknown

In advance of Sunday's Presidential election in Venezuela, U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Dick Lugar made the following statement:

"This Sunday, Venezuelans will head to the polls to elect their president. I am encouraged by the country's democratic fervor and commitment. Hopefully the voting and the tallying will be peaceful, fair and transparent. I strongly encourage Venezuela's authorities to ensure this and I call on all parties to respect the will of the Venezuelan people. Venezuela, once a source of democratic inspiration for many countries in the region, deserves our attention and should feel the solidarity of its many democratic friends from around the globe."
