Elizabeth Esty announced Monday the endorsement of Council 4 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, less than a month after announcing the support of Connecticut Laborers' District Council and Laborers' Local 611.
According to a release, Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano said "Our union members want Congress to focus on jobs and economic security for the middle class instead of preserving and expanding big tax breaks for the richest 2 percent of Americans. Elizabeth Esty is committed to this, and that's why we're pleased to endorse her candidacy. Elizabeth will battle for the middle class. We will work hard and put boots to the ground to get her elected."
Another union representative, AFSCME Local 538 Treasurer Deanna Chaparro of Meriden, singalled out esty's support of women's rights.
"Elizabeth Esty strikes me as a smart and thoughtful woman. With the ongoing attacks on women's and worker's rights, her presence is sorely needed in Washington," said
"I'm honored to have the endorsement of AFSCME Council 4," Esty said in a release. "Our communities run precisely because of the hard working men and women who step up and make a career of serving the public. I'm proud to stand with them to fight for the fair paychecks, secure retirements, affordable health care, and collective bargaining rights that all hardworking families deserve and have earned. And I'm looking forward to working with Council 4 and their 34,000 members to ensure that Connecticut's public employees have a voice in Congress."
