Congressman Robert Hurt released the following statement after the Department of Labor issued the August unemployment report:
"We have over $16 trillion dollars of debt and nearly 13 million Americans out of work and the people of Virginia's 5th District are still asking, "where are the jobs?". It has been nearly four years since President Obama signed his $800 billion dollar stimulus into law -- an initiative that was reported to ensure that our national unemployment rate would never rise above 8%. Now, for the 43rd straight month, our national unemployment rate continues to top 8%, with many places across Virginia's 5th District are suffering through chronic double-digit unemployment rates.
"House Republicans have led the way to restore American jobs, yet dozens of our pro-growth bills remain stalled in the Senate. We are committed to continuing this charge by adopting policies that will unleash the power of our Main Street businesses and restore an environment where they can hire and grow. We in the House believe that you did build that. It is our small businesses who create jobs, not the federal government, and we will continue our work to rein in the size and scope of the federal government so that our local businesses can expand and create the jobs that communities across the 5th District and across this country need."
