In December 2009, Governor Paterson signed into law a series of Klein sponsored bills which created "first in the nation" protections for struggling homeowners and deteriorating neighborhoods due to the foreclosure crisis fallout. Under the new laws banks are required to maintain foreclosed properties -- protecting residents and property values; tenants must receive proper notification and time to vacate a foreclosed property; millions more homeowners have the opportunity to negotiate mortgages.
In addition, Klein has developed numerous one-of-a-kind annual district events and programs to ensure that Bronx and Westchester communities stay safe and strong, among them:
* Annual Senior Appreciation Day which provides a meal and theater show for hundreds of area seniors
* Annual Summer concert series bringing the finest musicians and world class music free of charge to thousands of residents
* Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza -- an exclusive fireworks display and celebration for residents
* Annual Veterans Day and Black History Month Breakfasts providing food, fun and gratitude to hundreds of veterans and the African American community
* Free Graffiti and street cleaning programs for small businesses and houses of worship
* Protecting residents from troublesome and noisy area bars and nightclubs
* Fighting to bring the first bank in more than a decade to the Van Nest residential and business district
