On September 13, the Honorable Richard Cordray, Chairman of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, delivered his annual report to the Senate Banking Committee. Mr. Cordray has been before the committee on various occasions and I have asked him why he has not created a small business panel to review the effects of the Qualified Mortgage rule. The agency has still not moved forward with conducting the panel, so I pressed the director again.
Mr. Cordray, and the CFPB continue to ignore the need for a small business panel and on September 19, I, along with Senators Richard Shelby (R-AL), Bob Corker (R-TN) and Pat Toomey (R-PA), introduced legislation to require the CFRB to conduct the small business panel on the Mortgage rule. This rule will have a direct impact on small businesses and this legislation fulfills Congressional intent by requiring the CFPB to conduct the panel on the rule before it can go forward with a final version.
