Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly was pleased the U.S. Trade Representative took action by filing a case before the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China for that country's unfair trade practices in the auto industry. The Chinese government has been subsidizing the export of autos and auto parts, making their products artificially cheap and putting American manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage.

"I am pleased that the U.S. Trade Representative took action against China's unfair trade practices," said Donnelly. "China's policies create an unfair advantage for Chinese companies and workers, costing Americans jobs and economic security. I firmly believe we have the best workforce and the best products in the world, and when we are allowed to compete on an even playing field, we will win every time. We must continue to stand up for American workers and products and put an end to China's trade violations."

Donnelly has a long history of working to end China's unfair trade practices. In March, Donnelly and his colleagues in the House of Representatives sent a letter to President Obama urging him to take action against China's unfair practices in the auto parts sector. Donnelly is a co-sponsor of The Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act, H.R. 639, which would allow for tariffs to be imposed on certain goods imported from a country whose currency is unfairly valued against the U.S. dollar. The bill has a total of 230 cosponsors from both sides of the aisle, but has not yet come up for a vote in the House.
