Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today in response to the multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections and the expanded recall of almond butter and peanut butter. Twenty nine individuals in 18 states, including three in Connecticut, have become ill with a rare strain of salmonellosis. The latest announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that peanut butter manufactured by Sunland, Inc. of New Mexico may be the source of this foodborne illness outbreak.
"This latest recall clearly shows that we have much to do to improve the safety of our food products," said DeLauro. "We must implement the Food Safety Modernization Act in a timely and effective manner so we can better prevent outbreaks from happening in the first place. And we have to ensure that the CDC, FDA, and state and local agencies have the resources they need to identify these outbreaks early so we can prevent additional illnesses."
