Following House approval of legislation to ban the practice of using public funds for political conventions -- on a vote of 310-95 -- Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) released the following statement:
"Today, I offered my strong, enthusiastic support for legislation to prevent the use of taxpayer funds to help pay for national party conventions. Since 1976, more than $220 million in public funds have been used for convention purposes. This is wrong, and we need to put an end to it. I urge the Senate to join the House in prohibiting this practice in the future. With our national debt at $16 trillion and climbing, this money can be put to much better use."
