Inhofe Ukrainian Resolution Passes Senate

Location: Washington, DC

A resolution introduced by U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a member of theSenate Foreign Relations Committee, and co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Senate Majority Whip, passed the U.S. Senate on Saturday. The resolution, S.Res.466, calls for the release of Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko from prison.

"The Senate sent a firm message to Ukraine that their political persecution tactics of imprisonment and intimidation have no place in democracy," said Inhofe. "The official reaction from the Ukrainian government on the passage of my resolution sounds like some press release from Soviet-era apparatchiks. The people of Ukraine demand democracy, and judicial transparency is the first place to start. Our unwavering support is with Ms. Tymoshenko and political prisoners everywhere."

S.Res.466 calls for a visa ban against President Yanukovych and others responsible for Tymoshenko's imprisonment. It also calls for the Government of Ukraine to conduct the October parliamentary elections in a fair and transparent manner and in accordance with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe standards.
