Taxpayer-funded lifetime health care for state legislators is an extravagant perk that is out of touch with the realities that Michigan families face every day. You'd be hard-pressed to think of any other Michigan worker who gets lifetime health care after only six years on the job, and lawmakers should be held to the same standard as everybody else.
In fact, many residents are losing their jobs and seeing their health care benefits cut or eliminated altogether.
House Democrats passed a plan to end taxpayer-funded lifetime health care for future state legislators. Our lawmakers must share in the sacrifice being asked of residents all across the state. As we work to reform our government, create jobs and get Michigan's fiscal house back in order, it's critical that our elected officials lead by example.
Ending this costly perk is the right thing to do.
