Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today made the following statement congratulating Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on receiving the Congressional Gold Medal for her advocacy on behalf of the Burmese people and for the cause of human rights around the world:

"Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is extremely deserving of this award for her lifetime of service to the Burmese people and steadfast belief in freedom. This remarkable woman has made innumerable personal and professional sacrifices to stand against the ruling military junta in Burma and call for democratic reforms. She has overcome tremendous hardship in an effort to bring real change to her county and a new sense of hope to freedom fighters around the world.

"It is inspiring to see Suu Kyi walk into the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol -- free from the confines of house arrest -- and be honored with the Congressional Gold Medal for her dedication to freedom. Hoosiers look forward to welcoming Suu Kyi in Fort Wayne on Tuesday, and all Americans celebrate her courage as well as her accomplishments."

The Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom are the highest civilian awards in the United States. The Congressional Gold Medal dates back to the American Revolution and is awarded to individuals for distinguished achievements and contributions.
