Cicilline-Supported Manufacturing Bill Passes House

Statement

U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) released the following statement after House passage of the American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act, an important bill co-sponsored by the first-term U.S. Representative from Rhode Island to support and enhance the manufacturing sector.

"If Rhode Island and America are going to be able to compete in the 21st century, create well-paying jobs, and promote manufacturing as a vital part of the economy, then we need to bring together businesses, government, and a diverse set of stakeholders to create a winning, well-defined strategy. This is one several bills in the House Democrats' Make It In America Agenda that I've co-sponsored and will help our manufacturers here in Rhode Island and across the nation to adapt, expand, and become more competitive -- all while creating strong, middle-class jobs."

"Manufacturing has been a bright spot in our economy. Yet, recent jobs numbers show that if we are going to maintain and grow this critical sector, we need to better understand the policies of our foreign competitors and the challenges facing our manufacturers, and develop a coordinated strategy that ensures we are providing the right resources and support to help sustain and grow American manufacturing."

The American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act of 2012 calls on the President to submit to Congress a manufacturing strategy that helps promote job creation, growth, sustainability, innovation, and investment in this important sector of our economy. The legislation would also establish the American Manufacturing Competitiveness Board, which would be comprised of private and public appointees and be charged with developing a comprehensive manufacturing strategy. The bill passed the House yesterday by a vote of 339-77.
