Unemployment Outlook Discouraging, Workforce at 31-Year Low

Statement

Date: Sept. 7, 2012
Location: Williamsport, PA

Today the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced national unemployment numbers for the month of August, as well as revised numbers for June and July. Congressman Marino (R-PA) issued the following statement in response to the release:

"It could not be more abundantly clear to the American people that this President has failed. His policies have led to 43 consecutive months of unemployment at or above 8 percent, and since passing his stimulus bill in February 2009, the President has cost our economy 316,000 net jobs.

"In fact, in addition to revising unemployment numbers from both June and July downward, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 360,000 people gave up on the Obama economy last month.

"Rather than focus on economic growth, President Obama's unprecedented levels of spending tipped our national debt over $16 trillion earlier this week. Rather than put our nation on the track toward recovery and prosperity, this Administration is presiding over a workforce that is at the lowest it has ever been in the past 31 years.

"Mr. Obama's promises will not pay the bills or put food on the table for the 12.5 million Americans who are out of a job. The time for talk is over and without immediate action our economy will suffer irreparable damage at the expense of our country's most vulnerable citizens. We simply cannot afford to wait any longer.

"Despite opposition from the Senate and from the White House, we have passed 37 bills in the House of Representatives to create jobs, keep more money in the pockets of hardworking taxpayers, and increase opportunity for small and medium-sized businesses. Americans need common-sense solutions and they deserve a shot at a better future."
