Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08) released the following statement this morning on the attacks on the American embassy in Cairo and the consulate in Benghazi, Libya:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Ambassador Stevens and of all those killed in yesterday's attack on the United States Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
In a city which was once held up as the brightest hope for Libyan independence, and in the Egyptian capital, these attacks by Islamic radicals serve as a stark reminder of the challenges and uncertainty that lie ahead as this historically volatile region undergoes rapid and dramatic changes.
An attack on an American embassy is an attack on American soil. These are acts of terrorism and aggression against the United States and they must be answered. The American people expect that those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
We pray this morning for the safety and security of all Americans serving our country in the diplomatic corps. These peaceful messengers of American democratic values must be protected from the designs of those seeking to silence the voice of free people around the world."
