Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08) released the following statement on the Department of Labor's announcement that only 96,000 jobs were created in August, and the unemployment rate dropped to 8.1% as more Americans dropped out of the work force:
"Today's unemployment report paints a picture of an economy struggling to recover under the weight of onerous regulations, burdensome debt and deficits, and a broken tax code. Countless Americans have simply given up looking for work as the number of men and women working or looking for work fell to a 31-year low. Most disheartening, the number of family-sustaining manufacturing jobs fell by 15,000 - the most in two years.
Last night, President Obama pledged to create 1 million new manufacturing jobs by 2016 despite his failed policies having already gutted 500,000 manufacturing jobs from our economy.
As such, today I release my "Made in America" Manufacturing Plan which is the result of my visits to 100 businesses in 100 days this summer.
As Congress returns to session next week, I return with this report as feedback from my meetings with local businesses to share with my colleagues. Armed with this knowledge, I will continue to pursue pro-growth economic policies which encourage investment and promote job creation.
"Made in America" stands for quality, value and ingenuity. It is time we start expecting the same from our Federal Government."
