Keeping our communities safe has always been a top priority for Mary Margaret. Her contributions to public safety have run the gamut from funding a criminal justice compound to train new recruits, to secure load laws, to fixes to dangerously unsafe stretches of numerous roads throughout the district.

When it comes to our roads, nothing is more important than protecting the lives within our community. Mary Margaret sponsored SB5000, also known as Hailey's Law, after learning of the horrible experiences of an accident that never should have happened. Hailey's car was in a head-on collision with a driver released after being cited for driving under the influence. The driver caught a taxicab back to their vehicle to continue driving drunk, ending in a horrific injury that nearly ended Hailey's life. Hailey's Law protects all drivers better by preventing drunk drivers from returning to the road. Police are now directed to impound the vehicles of motorists cited for driving under the influence for a minimum of 12 hour, preventing the possibility of Hailey's collision from happening again.

Mary Margaret was named Legislator of the Year for 2011 by the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs. She received this prestigious award from the WACOPS for her work in the 2011 legislative session on SB 5000 and the increased protection it gives to all drivers. WACOPS stand behind Mary Margaret's relentless drive to keep us safe on our roads and in our communities.
